Anim. Tech.

Protein for Horses: Essential Amino Acids & Muscle Health

Proteins are complex molecules that form cells, enzymes, hormones, tissues and organs within the horse’s body.

Protein is also one of the key nutrient groups that make up a balanced diet. As a result, there is considerable focus on ensuring horses receive adequate protein, particularly performance horses and those in training that require appropriate muscle development and function for competitive success.

Most feeds formulated for horses with higher workloads contain a higher crude protein content than feeds designed for leisure horses. These feeds are formulated to meet the increased protein requirements of exercising horses.

For example, a 500kg horse in light work has a protein requirement of approximately 700g per day. This can easily be met by feeding 9kg of average hay containing 8% crude protein and 2.5kg of GAIN Easy Go Cubes containing 10% crude protein. For horses with access to pasture, grass will provide additional protein.

The same horse in training and undertaking hard work has a protein requirement of 860-1,000g per day. While this may seem high, it can easily be met by feeding 7.5kg of the same hay and 4kg of GAIN Ultra Performance Cubes containing 14% protein.

Inadequate protein intake should therefore not be an issue in horses receiving feeds designed for their level of exercise. However, simply meeting a horse’s protein requirement does not tell the whole story.

What Makes a Good Quality Protein for Horses?

Alongside meeting protein requirements, it is important that your horse consumes good-quality protein. But what exactly does that mean?

Protein quality is determined by the amino acids that make up the protein. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, linking together in chains to form polypeptides, which then combine to form proteins.

This is similar to the way letters (amino acids) combine to form words (polypeptides), and words combine to form sentences (proteins).

More than 200 amino acids have been identified; however, only 20 are commonly found as components of proteins. Of these 20 amino acids, 10 can be synthesised in the horse’s body, while the remaining 10 cannot and must be supplied through the diet.

Amino acids that can be synthesised by the body are known as non-essential amino acids, while those that must be supplied through the diet are known as essential amino acids.

Proteins containing higher levels of essential amino acids are classified as high-quality proteins, whereas proteins containing predominantly non-essential amino acids are considered lower quality. Feeding a diet containing high-quality proteins is therefore recommended, particularly for equine athletes with higher workloads and greater protein demands.

What Is the Importance of Lysine?

Lysine is an essential amino acid and is also known as the first limiting amino acid. This means it is the amino acid most likely to be deficient in the horse’s diet. If lysine requirements are not met, protein synthesis becomes limited, even when all other amino acids are supplied in adequate quantities.

For this reason, lysine is often added to feeds, particularly those designed for horses in work.

A lysine intake of 35-50g per day is suitable for most horses in training.

How Do Amino Acids Support Muscle Development and Function?

As skeletal muscle is primarily composed of protein, providing a diet rich in essential amino acids is one of the most effective ways to support muscle synthesis, growth, function and repair.

Ensuring the diet contains adequate lysine is important, and research indicates that methionine and leucine, two other essential amino acids, are also important stimulators of muscle protein synthesis in horses, humans and other species.

Leucine is classified as a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA), along with valine and isoleucine.

BCAAs have been proposed to enhance performance by contributing to energy production and delaying the onset of fatigue. However, the evidence supporting these claims is variable. Therefore, providing a balanced diet that includes high-quality protein sources, meets energy requirements, and supplies essential vitamins and minerals, alongside an appropriate training programme, remains the best approach for promoting muscle development and function.

What Are the Best Sources of Essential Amino Acids for Horses?

A diet containing a variety of high-quality protein sources is ideal to ensure all essential amino acids are supplied.

Grass, good-quality hay and haylage are generally good sources of leucine, isoleucine and lysine, but are often lower in methionine. The only reliable way to determine the amino acid profile of forage is through laboratory analysis.

Soya is widely regarded as one of the highest-quality plant protein sources due to its high protein content and complete essential amino acid profile.

As a result, it is a popular ingredient among feed manufacturers, including GAIN Equine Nutrition, which uses soya bean meal and soya flakes within its feeds to provide a highly digestible source of quality protein while remaining low in starch and sugar.

Alongside soya, GAIN Equine Nutrition also uses sunflower seed meal, alfalfa, linseed meal and peas to enhance the essential amino acid profile of its feeds and support optimum performance.

When comparing feeds, look for these quality protein sources listed prominently in the composition declaration, as this indicates a higher inclusion rate within the formulation.

For more information, contact your local GAIN Equine Nutrition representative.

Dr. Stephanie Wood, PhD, BSc (Hons), PGDip., RNutr (Animal), R.
